UFC 109

Ok so check this out, two UFC Hall of Famers are set to square up tonight Saturday February 6th 2010. So why does no one really care? That is because both Randy The Natural Couture and Mark The Hammer Coleman are old. There is a reason why both are Hall of Famers that is because they ARE PAST THEIR PRIME! Couture (46) and Coleman (45) both with a combined age of 91! Now my intention is not to discourage people from watching the bout. My problem is with UFC president Dana White. The UFC is longer what real MMA organizations such as Pride FC and K-1 used to be. IT was faire; if a fighter deserved a title shot then he got his title shot. Today the UFC sets fights that it believes will be entertaining and the fights the Fans wish to see. Although the thought is nice, in order for there to be a fight the fans wish to see, both fighters have to earn it! In the 2009 NBA year it seemed everybody wished to see the LeBron vs. Kobe matchup in the finals.

Nike went as far as having those comical puppets hyping it all up, but nevertheless LeBron was unable to take his team to the Finals, and that match up did not happen. It used to be that fighters earned their title shots. I fear that this is no longer the case in the UFC. These types of fight scheduling are detrimental to the sport and very unfair for the athletes, and although it might not seem like it, it is also unfair to the fans.
Brock Lesnar became the Heavyweight champion in only his 3th professional MMA fight, good for him, he lost his first fight to Frank Mir, by a mediocre ankle lock, and then he goes and beats a very worn out Heath Herring via decision, then he gets a title shot, but he did not deserve that title shot.

If one recalls the drama was that at the time Randy couture was on his period or something and had decided that he didn't want to defend his title again the current top contender at that time who was Antonio Minatauro Nogera. Couture had even dropped out of his UFC contract and Nogera was set to fight Frank Mir for an interim title spot. Mir won the fight and he was installed as the interim champ. Meanwhile Couture is set to fight Lesnar , out of nowhere for the heavyweight title. You can see how this upset Mir, who believed he was now the champ. To make matters worse, Lesnar wins the fight. This is more drama than a Mexican soap on Univision. An is completely unnecessary for a sport. The UFC needs is beging to feel like what the WWF used to be, although the fighting is real, the issue about the fighters egos and dumb grudges between fighters is seriously quickly becoming old.

A similar fiasco lead to the retirement of on e of the best light-heavyweights in the world; Quentin Rampage Jackson. After losing his title (a title he earned after knocking out Chuck Liddell and defending it against Dan Henderson) to Forest Griffin, he amounted spectacular comeback as the number one contender after impressive wins over Keith Jardine and a spectacular second round knockout of Wanderlei Sylva. At the time Rashad Evans was now the champ, and it all appeared that a spectacular bout between Evans and Jackson was set to be held. Two months before the fight rampage suffered a broken jaw in training, he requested for an additional month to heal, Dana White said no and replaced Jackson with Machida who defeated Evans and now he is the champion.

So all expected to see a Jackson Machida bout, instead White set a Jackson Evans fight, Jackson grew tired of the nonsense and he retired, stating he would not fight bouts that where unnecessary. Yet when Lesnar , who has not fought since July of 2009 requested time off before his title defense against Carwin, he got, it, and now Carwin is set to fight Velasques, so essentially he is missing out on his deserved title shot.

These type of tactics have really hurt the UFC and quite frankly there is more headaches in trying to figure out why certain fights are set. If the UFC wants to maintain its position as the leading MMA franchise in North America it needs to stop the unfair antics, and not buy in to the egos of the fighters. Fedor Emilianenko , the pound for pound best heavyweight in the world refuses to fight for the UFC because of these fiascos. It is time the fans get to see some real good fights that are faire and well deserving. Till next time this has been Amarjit Haymaker Singh.

Upcoming Boxing Schedule

Saturday, February 6 - Monterrey, Mexico lightweights:

Edwin Valero (26-0, 26 KOs) vs. Antonio Demarco (23-1-1, 17 KOs)
Fight will be televised on SHOWTIME.

We have a knockout artist in Edwin Valero which shows in his record 26 wins 26 KOs. He has heavy hands that move quickly he's a punishing type of fighter. Valero won the vacant WBC lightweight title last April and will be defending it for the second time.

Antonio Demarco is an intelligent boxer/puncher which was displayed in his last fight were he placed a hurting on Jose Alfaro (23-5 3 KOs). Demarco was able to get a TKO in the 10th round to win the opportunity to fight the WBC lightweight champion Valero.

Prediction: Now this one on paper is quite simple to workout. Demarco stands 5'10" with a reach of 72" compared to Valero who stands at 5'7" with a 69" reach. Demarco needs to use his god given attributes in order to keep Valero at bay. Stick the jab use the entire ring, his height, and circle away from Valero’s power. On the other hand, Valero needs to jab to get into the inside and absolutely destroy Demarco once he's there. If Valero places his focus on Demarcos slender body early then Demarco will fold. The later the fight goes on the advantage tips to Demarco for he gets stronger the deeper the fight goes. The winner will be Valero by KO in the 7th round. Valero is just to much in the prime of his career ready and willing to damage Demarco.
